Since getting our fab Haba fire grill we had used it as a straight forward fire to keep warm & cooked marshmallows & popcorn on the fire but hadn't used the grill yet. Then when I saw this easy recipe on Taming the Goblin, I decided to try it out.
I will be the first to admit that I have never cooked on an open fire but figured what was the worst that could happen - they would be totally burnt!
Luckily on Fridays when we have our Scandinavian Outdoor Days, we have 2 students (although on this occasion 1 was off sick) so one of the students was able to spend time making the buns with the children. They were simple puff pastry squares with a piece of chocolate in the middle. The children then 'wrapped' the pastry all up & brushed it with milk.
We have a great supply of firewood now thanks to one of our familes donating a couple of big bags of sticks & the children had gathered lots of smaller sticks when we visited the forest earlier in the week. I have to say that the fire is very easy to light, due the the depth of the fire pit.
Once the fire had taken I added the grill piece - now this was pure trial & error as initially I hung it too near to the fire & the buttery pastry started to hiss & spit, but the children loved this bit! I raised the grill a little & we were quite amazed to begin to see the pastry change to a golden colour & the smell was delicious.
However I did leave them on too long before turning them over, so they were burnt on one side but I just made sure to take them off quicker the next time. The children loved them - burnt bits & all, they were declared 'delicious'.
Thanks to pinterest I have discovered a load of camp fire recipes, so we will continue to try different things on the fire & grill as the weeks progress.

I was struck by the pictures of the children sitting around the fire. It seems they were talking and interacting with each other replaying what humans have done for eons. It also reminded me of our summer camping trips around the fire. You must be creating great memories.
ReplyDeleteHi Tom, yeah you're right they do chat away while sitting round the fire & it's incredible how many of them have never ben near a fire. Thanks for popping over & commenting.
DeleteThese are a must, I'd never have thought to grill them like that. Unfortunately we don't have your fire pit, but plenty of campfires in the summer, and an oven we cook them in for now :)
