We have a theme each month that is used for as starting point for stories, songs or art work. This month it's All About Me. I don't go mad with topic work & flog a theme to death but this is probably one of my favourite ones as we have loads of fun creating paper plate faces & full sized paper people.
We do talk about the colour of eyes, hair etc. but don't go into skin tones etc. & no child has to paint their paper plate face in a particular way. In fact most love to give themselves blue noses or green mouths. Today we had fun looking in the mirror to see where eyes would go in the round of the plate.
Children who are not ususally first to the art table couldn't wait to do this, and several then left this table & headed over to the easel to paint some more 'faces'.
Interestingly, some children drew a small person within the plate, rather than treating the plate like a whole face.
We had 4 off to day so they will get a chance to paint theirs when they come back. The plate faces dried very quickly & I was able to get them up on the wall on the same day & I can't wait to see the children & their parents' faces when they see the display tomorrow morning.
