This school year I have been trying out as many of the great art ideas I have come across on the internet & in particular I have tried to offer different alternatives to paint with other than brushes. So far we have painted with plastic bottles, rolling pins, cardboard tubes, marbles & balloons. So when I saw a post on spaghetti painting on The Chocolate Muffin Tree and Instructables I was sure that my class would enjoy handling the spaghetti & making it 'dance' on the page & I couldn't wait to try it!
Only 8 children chose not to do this activity & of those 8 2 rarely take part in any group art activity preferring to use the easels.
Those who did embraced it with gusto and had no problems handling the spaghetti, they loved mixing the pasta into the paint & most did make very beautiful 'worm like' paintings for at least 2 pages before then just enjoying rubbing the pasta & paint all over the page.
I have come to expect that every art activity involving paint will end up with the children making hand prints & then enjoying rubbing the whole page with paint.
This is a really fun activity & one that we will be trying again - I have seen it done outside on a larger scale where the children throw the spaghetti at a page & think we'll do this in the summer term.
This is such a cute idea! I have to admit though, at first I was a bit "ewww" about it, but now the idea seems to be really pasta-liciously exciting and I can't wait to try it in class.
ReplyDeleteYes it does seem a bit weird & slimy & I did expect some of the children to be more squeamish about it but they loved it. Thanks for dropping by & commenting.
DeleteKierna,
ReplyDeleteI loved reading and seeing this.
I've never done this with children, and think I'll need to do soon!
So true isn't it that generally children end up painting the paper with their hands! :)
This is how creativity blossoms!
Brenda
Hi Brenda - yip no matter what you start with some will always end up to the elbows in paint & just rubbing it round the page! Hope all is well with you, Kierna
Deletethose turned out beautifully pasta-tively beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh haha - that is a good one! yes it was great fun & very much a hands-on experience, thanks for taking the time to comment, Kierna
DeleteThanks for sharing! Love it!
ReplyDeleteAnytime - and thanks to you for inspiring me to try this - definitely one to do again, Kierna
DeleteI actually did this activity today with my 2 almost 3 year old. At first he looked at it like what do you want me to do with this. Then the spagehtti ended up in a big blob in the end and on the floor. Then he stepped in it. LOL. So then I thought why dont we throw it onto the easel with paper. He liked that idea much better.
ReplyDeleteKaci : )
Hi Kaci, yes that's my plan for next term when it's a bit warmer. I think it will be great fun to throw it at large sheets of cardboard. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Kierna
DeleteSo true, Kierna! In my experience, they also end up painting their hands and arms too! haha...This looks like fun! I think my class would enjoy this activity.
ReplyDeleteThey loved it Gina, looking forrward to doing it outside this term too.
